One of the newest inventions on Wall Street, exchange traded funds - or ETFs as they are often called for short - allow investors to buy shares of a basket of stocks, often designed to match a broader index such as the S&P 500 or the Wilshire 5000. These ETFs can be bought or sold during regular trading hours, unlike traditional low cost index funds, but they are subject to regular broker commissions.
