The $500 Series I Savings Bond Certificate with George C. Marshall Vignette

The $500 Series I savings bond is sold at face value through local banks, interest is added back to principal instead of being paid out like a traditional bond, and the interest rate is based, in part, upon changes in inflation.

The $500 Series I savings bond features George C. Marshall, one of the most renowned military figures in the history of the United States. Marshall later received the Nobel Peace Prize and was responsible for largely building the economies of the world following the devastation of World War II. This I bond was designed to honor his memory.

Here is the Treasury Department's official release regarding the Marshall Series I savings bond:

George C. Marshall (1880-1959) was one of the most renowned military figures in United States history, serving as a General of the Army, Chief of Staff of the Army, Secretary of State and Secretary of Defense. He led U.S. military efforts to victory in World War II. Later, through the Marshall Plan, he built the foundation for the economic rehabilitation of Europe for which he received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1953- the first soldier to receive this honor.
