Fiscal Year

By Joshua Kennon, About.com

Definition: A fiscal year is any period of 12 consecutive months for which a company or business calculates earnings, profits, and losses. It does not necessarily reside within a calendar year (e.g., a company may have a fiscal year of October - September). The fiscal year is used as a benchmark to compare a company's growth from year to year.
