Real estate investment trusts, or REITs, can be a convenient way to buy real estate indirectly through your brokerage account just like a regular stock. Although the tax rules for REIT dividends are different than regular dividends, they often offer higher yields without worrying about getting a phone call from a tenant in the early morning hours.
